BIS & ISI Mark Certification for Indian Manufacturers

If your product falls under a notified Indian Standard, an ISI licence isn't optional. We map the correct scheme, prepare the documentation and get your factory audit-ready — through to the mark being granted.

What it is

The ISI mark is the BIS certification mark confirming that a product manufactured in India conforms to the relevant Indian Standard (IS). For over 100 product categories — from cement and steel to electrical appliances, cylinders and toys — carrying the ISI mark is a legal requirement to manufacture and sell, not a voluntary quality label.

Who needs it

Any Indian manufacturer of a product notified under a Quality Control Order or the Compulsory Registration Scheme. This includes established manufacturers adding a new notified product line, and new factories that need a licence in place before their first commercial dispatch.

How it works

The BIS/ISI licensing process, start to finish

Step 1: Scheme mapping

We confirm the exact Indian Standard your product falls under, and which licensing route applies — this decides the entire documentation and testing plan that follows.

Step 2: Documentation & application

Application form, factory and machinery details, in-house test facility list and QA manual are prepared and filed through the BIS portal, with a written scope agreed before any fee is discussed.

Step 3: Sample testing

Samples are tested against the Indian Standard at a BIS-recognised or NABL-accredited laboratory. We review draft test reports before final submission to catch gaps early.

Step 4: Factory audit

BIS officers assess your in-house lab, process controls and quality records. We rehearse this with your team beforehand so audit day holds no surprises.

Step 5: Licence grant & surveillance

Once granted, the licence is subject to periodic surveillance and marking fees. We track these obligations so the licence stays valid.

FAQ

BIS & ISI certification — common questions

Which products need the ISI mark?

Any product notified by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) as falling under mandatory certification — including cement, steel bars, electrical appliances, switches and cables, LPG cylinders, pressure cookers, toys, helmets and packaged drinking water, among 100+ other categories. If your product is on this list, selling it in India without a valid ISI licence is not permitted. A free scheme review is the fastest way to confirm whether your product is covered.

How long does BIS/ISI certification take?

Timelines vary by product and by how quickly your factory and documentation are ready, but a typical BIS licence — covering application, sample testing at a BIS-recognised lab and the factory audit — runs a few months from a complete application to licence grant. Incomplete documentation or non-conforming test results are the most common causes of delay, which is why we confirm the paperwork before filing.

What does the factory audit check?

BIS auditors verify that your in-house testing facility, manufacturing process and quality control system can consistently produce product conforming to the relevant Indian Standard — not just that a sample once passed a lab test. We prepare your team and your QC records for this beforehand so the audit isn't the first time anyone has seen the checklist.

Can Maanak handle both the ISI licence and CRS registration for a mixed product range?

Yes. Some manufacturers have a portfolio where certain products fall under ISI licensing and others fall under CRS registration or Scheme X. We confirm the correct scheme for each product line first, since filing under the wrong scheme is the single biggest cause of delay we see.
